Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy

IFS is an experiential, evidence-based therapy model that was developed in the 1980s by Richard Schwartz. IFS recognizes that within each of us exists a system of distinct “parts” that interact like a family system. These parts may feel like separate thought patterns, feelings, or impulses inside you. Through IFS, we explore these parts to heal old wounds, reduce self-criticism, and strengthen your connection to your core Self—your calm, compassionate center.

An “Internal Family”: Parts and Self

IFS asserts that within each person, there are various Parts whose roles and feelings are shaped by the past, and a core Self that embodies strengths and groundedness in the present.

Parts: aspects of our identity shaped by past experiences. Some develop strategies to prevent pain (Protectors), while others carry the wounds and beliefs formed from those experiences (Exiles).

Protectors

Manage emotions and behaviors to keep you functioning and in control. Their role is to prevent overwhelming pain, trauma, or negative beliefs from surfacing—often through strategies like:

  • The Intellectualizer – arming up with knowledge to overcome negative feelings

  • The Inner Critic – pushes for perfection to avoid rejection

  • The People-Pleaser – prioritizes others to prevent conflict or feeling like a burden

  • The Anxious Planner – anticipates outcomes to prevent being blindsided

  • The Numb or Angry Parts – shut down or lash out when feelings feel overwhelming

Exiles

Parts that were compartmentalized in the past and remain stuck carrying wounds and the beliefs formed from them, such as:

  • Shame, isolation, despair, grief, terror, anger

Self

A state of consciousness distinct and separate from any of your Parts.

  • A calm, grounded center that allows you to respond with intention, rather than react from fear or past wounds.

  • The ability to work with your Parts without being overwhelmed, and with a clear sense of what they need to heal.

  • Access clarity that allows the weight of the past and fears of the future to be held in a new perspective.

“Self” – Your Internal Game-Changer

The transformative component of IFS is accessing your core Self and bringing that presence into the equation. No matter how buried your Self may feel beneath anxiety, self-criticism, or depression, it is there and ready to emerge.

When you're in Self, you naturally embody what IFS calls the 8 C's: calmness, curiosity, clarity, compassion, confidence, courage, creativity, and connectedness. You don't have to manufacture or force these qualities—they emerge naturally when parts step back and let your Self lead.

Ultimately, access to Self supports healing through two key shifts:

  1. Protective parts adopt more balanced and flexible roles

  2. Exiled parts fully process and release wounds and limiting beliefs

The IFS Session:
An Interactive Meditation

IFS sessions are like an interactive meditation. You access the Self mindset by cultivating an open, nonjudgmental awareness of your inner experience while engaging with parts in real time. Based on what arises in each session, I facilitate communication, offer reflections, and guide with questions that support the IFS process—while respecting the needs and pace of each part we encounter.

The goal of sessions is to build trust and collaboration between your Self and your parts, and to help your Self bring new resources to patterns that have been stuck in place.

Sessions typically involve:

  • Mapping out the parts involved in a particular pattern

  • Connecting with parts to understand their intentions, concerns, and needs

  • Helping protective parts adopt healthier, updated strategies

  • Supporting exiled parts to process trauma safely

This experiential, relational approach provides a space to build trust between Self and Parts so transformation can unfold naturally.

Living from Your Authentic Self

As IFS healing progresses, something profound happens: you start living more from Self and less from protective patterns. Once the protective, fear-based strategy feels like less of a necessity, it’s a remarkable feeling to make decisions in line with your values and passions.

Intuitively, you may find yourself responding to challenges with more calm and clarity, and showing up in relationships more authentically. The parts that once controlled your life become trusted collaborators. With this one life we’re each given, I can’t think of anything more priceless than discovering that who you are beneath the pain and protection is already whole.
